About the Data
Like many industries, the global diamond sector was significantly impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic. Our 2020 figures clearly show this decline, caused by temporary mine shutdowns, store closures, and reduced consumer demand for luxury goods amid financial uncertainty. However, in 2022, the industry saw an unexpected recovery, with increased spending on luxury items as people celebrated important milestones,
even surpassing pre-pandemic levels in some areas. In 2023 and 2024, however, the natural diamond sector has faced renewed challenges, which are also visible in Antwerp's import and export figures. This dip is largely driven by geopolitical tensions, cautious consumer markets in China and the U.S., and rising competition from more affordable lab-grown diamonds. Additionally, Antwerp's figures reflect the absence of Russian diamonds, which previously made up 35% of annual diamond trade in Antwerp. Since the January 2024 EU and G7 sanctions, no Russian diamonds flow through Antwerp, impacting our overall trade volumes.
