Import Procedure for Private Persons
In Belgium, the trade of diamonds (both natural and synthetic) for professional purposes is strictly regulated (Royal Decree of November 20, 2019). However, private individuals must also declare the import of diamonds into Belgium. This can be done through any customs office, if the diamonds meet the following conditions:
- The import occurs in (hand) luggage, via the internet, by post, or courier.
- The import is for non-commercial purposes (for personal use).
- The weight of the diamond is less than 0.5 carats (0.1 grams), and the value is under €1,000.
- It does not involve natural rough diamonds.
If the diamonds do not meet these conditions, they must be imported through the customs office at the Diamond Office (AWDC).
To ensure a smooth process at the Diamond Office, please send an email to doimport@awdc.be with the following information/documents:
- Tracking number
- Contact details
- Purchase invoice from the seller
- If applicable, an invoice from the sales platform
The Diamond Office (AWDC) will provide you the procedure and a calculation of the costs (VAT – Administrative fee – Storage fee) via email.
